Journalist backs Conte to ‘unlock’ Spurs youngster after return from injury

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has predicted that Antonio Conte’s arrival at Tottenham Hotspur could unlock the potential of Ryan Sessegnon by finally giving the youngster a chance to play in his preferred left-wing-back role.

Spurs fans would have hoped to see Sessegnon hit the ground running after returning to the club this summer following a successful loan spell at Hoffenheim last season.

However, the youngster’s progress has once again been hindered by an injury as the former Fulham man has been out of action since picking up a hamstring problem while on duty with the England Under-21s back in September.

Gold revealed that the 21-year-old has now recovered from his injury and is expected to take part in outdoor training this week.

However, he stated that the club will take it slowly with the youngster so as not to push him too quickly and cause another problem to his troublesome hamstring.

The journalist went on to discuss how Sessegnon’s qualities would be a perfect fit for the left-wing-back role in Antonio Conte’s system.

Gold wrote: “If Sessegnon can move past this difficult stage early in his career and regain full and consistent fitness that he will find a new head coach at Tottenham who can not only improve him but has the formation to unlock the best of him.

“The wing-back role is made for Sessegnon, who knows how to operate in the final third as well as defend at the other end of the pitch.

“It’s easy for his injuries and the frustration it causes fans to overshadow just how much of a talent the youngster is, with some of the continent’s top clubs competing for his services with Tottenham in the summer of 2019.”

I was never really convinced about Sessegnon even before we signed him. While he has a good left foot and is very quick, I simply do not think he is good enough on the ball to shine at the very top level. However, he is still quite young and has time on his side to improve.
