Journalist backs Spurs to move for Serie A star with reported £127m release clause

According to journalist Ekrem Konnur, Tottenham Hotspur hold an interest in Juventus defender Matthijs De Ligt ahead of the January transfer window.

Calciomercato.it were the first to report after Antonio Conte’s arrival at Spurs that the Italian had asked the North London club to pursue De Ligt in January.

The same publication revealed three weeks ago that Spurs were the front-runners for the Netherlands international, who was ‘liked’ by many other clubs across the continent. The report added that Juve were open to cashing in on the central defender in January.

De Ligt’s agent Mino Raiola admitted earlier this week his client is ready for ‘the next step’ in his career but hinted that a transfer was only likely to go through in the summer.

Konur has now backed up the claim regarding Spurs’ interest in the former Ajax defender. The journalist also insisted De Ligt wants to leave the Allianz Stadium in January.

According to Dutch publication 4-4-2, although the centre-back has a release clause of €150m in his Juventus contract, Tottenham would be hoping to land him for a significantly lower price.

Spurs Web Opinion

Spurs lack natural cover/competition for Ben Davies in the left-centre-back role and I would not be surprised if that was one of Conte’s priorities to address in January. De Ligt would be an excellent signing but Juventus are likely to demand top-dollar for the Dutchman. So Tottenham might look at cheaper alternatives.
