Journalist believes it’s ‘very possible’ Spurs could beat Arsenal to midfield star

Journalist Jacque Talbot believes it is ‘very possible’ that Tottenham could beat Arsenal to the signing of Lyon midfielder Lucas Paqueta this summer.

Reports indicate that Spurs continue to be on the lookout for a playmaker this summer (Evening Standard), with Paqueta originally thought to be one of the names on Antonio Conte’s radar (Football.London).

L’Equipe reported earlier this month that the 24-year-old has expressed a desire to leave Lyon this summer and that the French club would be willing to sell him if they receive a suitable offer.

Arsenal have also been credited with an interest in the Brazilian (Media Foot), with journalist Ben Jacobs even claiming last week that the Gunners are confident they can persuade the Lyon star to move to the Emirates this summer.

However, Talbot has now suggested that Spurs could beat out their North London rivals to Paqueta since Antonio Conte’s men have Champions League football to offer.

When asked if Tottenham could win the race for the Lyon star, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “They missed out on Jesus, who went to Arsenal, so there’s that aspect of it as well.

“I think Spurs is very possible for Paqueta, especially because they’re in the Champions League as well, so that’s a very, very possible one.”

I do expect us to sign a creative midfielder before the transfer window closes. However, it is unclear who out of the likes of Paqueta, James Maddison, Youri Tieleman and Nabil Fakir we will go for.

We know that Paratici likes to open negotiations for several players before deciding who to pursue. So, we might not accelerate our pursuit of a playmaker until the final couple of weeks of the window.
