Journalist believes Spurs could sacrifice 25-year-old this summer

Pete O’Rourke believes that Tottenham will consider offers for Emerson Royal this summer as the North London club need to raise money to fund moves for their transfer targets.

After a poor start to his Tottenham career, Emerson managed to win over the Spurs fan base with his impressive displays in the second half of last season.

This campaign, the Brazilian has been an understudy to Pedro Porro, with the Spaniard making the inverted right-back position his own, arguably being one of Tottenham’s most consistent performers since Ange Postecoglou arrived through the door.

Emerson filled in impressively at centre-back when Spurs were dealing with an injury crisis earlier this season but questions have been raised about whether he offers enough as the inverted full-back role.

Do Tottenham need to upgrade on Emerson Royal?

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold suggested last month that the Lilywhites might be forced to enter the market in the summer for a more adequate cover for Porro.

O’Rourke has now explained that the Brazilian was the subject of interest from Saudi Arabia during the last transfer window and remarked that Spurs will have to consider any offers they receive for the right back this summer.

The journalist told Football Insider: “Emerson Royal had a bit of interest from Saudi Pro League sides in the January transfer window. Pedro Porro seems to be the clear first-choice right-back for Postecoglou and Spurs.

“If there’s any interest in Emerson this summer then Spurs will have to make a decision on his future. If they are going to be busy in the transfer window this summer then they’re going to have to balance the books.”

I expect Tottenham to cash in on Emerson and bring in a dynamic full-back who can operate on both sides to cover for both Porro and Udogie. Ben Davies will likely stay as a squad player, given that he can operate at left-back and centre-back.
