Journalist believes Spurs will go for a ‘project signing’ in key area of the pitch

Journalist Paul Brown believes that Tottenham Hotspur will replace Harry Kane with a ‘project signing’ such as Gift Orban if the England captain does end up leaving the club.

The Times reported on Tuesday evening that Spurs are now increasingly resigned to losing their star striker as Bayern Munich have communicated their intention to make an improved £94.5m offer for the player.

News broke earlier this morning that Tottenham have now accepted Bayern’s latest offer which is understood that Spurs will receive over £80m up front, with the total fee of the deal taking it beyond £110m (Independent), however his future remains up in the air.

The publication added that Spurs are thus expected to step up their interest in Orban, who has set the Belgian top flight alight since joining Gent back in January.

It was previously reported by Alasdair Gold via Football.London on Monday that Tottenham hold a ‘strong interest’ in Orban and that the club are likely to sign a young striker of the Nigerian’s profile if Kane does decide to leave.

Spurs fans will not get a big-name Kane replacement

Brown has now also backed up that claim, stating that the Lilywhites are not expected to spend a bulk of any potential fee for Kane on one big-name striker.

When asked about Orban potentially being the 30-year-old’s replacement, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “Yeah, nobody is going to be getting too excited if they see that as a straight replacement for Kane, I don’t think it would be.

“I do think that Spurs would be looking to replace Kane’s goals in a variety of areas, and that they wouldn’t go for one massively high-profile signing as a direct replacement.

“I think it’s more likely that they sign more of a project striker. Someone they can develop and work with and that perhaps that role is rotated or maybe even they switch the system without Kane and try to play with more than one forward.”

Tottenham’s plan appears to be to sign two young, up-and-coming strikers to cover for Richarlison rather than taking a gamble on a big name like Vlahovic or Kolo Munai.

Veliz is evidently one of those two young players and I believe that the club will have to move for either Orban or Elle Wahi should Kane decide to leave.
