Journalist claims 22-year-old Spurs target could be cheaper Maddison alternative

Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Tottenham would be able to get Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus for a much lower fee than James Maddison this summer.

Reports over the last few weeks have indicated that Spurs are on the lookout for a creative midfielder (Evening Standard) with Maddison said to be one of the options on Antonio Conte’s radar (GiveMeSport).

The Leicester star is also thought to be the subject of heavy interest from Newcastle United this summer (Luke Edwards).

Meanwhile, GhanaWeb reported last week that Spurs also hold an interest in Ajax starlet Mohammed Kudus.

The report claimed that Conte’s men are ‘confident’ they can strike a deal for the 22-year-old next summer if they fail to sign him during this transfer window.

This was subsequently followed by a report from Ghanasoccernet, who claimed that Spurs scouts were in attendance during Ajax’s match against Fortuna Sittard on Saturday to watch Kudus in action.

It was suggested that the North London club were impressed by the youngster and were readying an offer for him.

Jones believes that the Ajax star would be a much more economical option than Maddison.

When asked about Tottenham’s rumoured interest in Kudus, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “I do believe that it’s potentially a position that they are looking to add even more depth to.

“And the signs are, I think, that he actually might be available at a much better fee than you would get someone like James Maddison at, so we’ll have to watch this space.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham’s interest in Kudus has only been reported by Ghanian publications. None of the Dutch or English publications have picked up these reports.

That suggests that the information is coming only from the player’s entourage, and that makes me sceptical regarding the seriousness of Spurs’ interest in the 22-year-old.
