Journalist claims 29-year-old prefers to join West Ham despite Spurs interest

According to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, Jesse Lingard prefers to join West Ham United over Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Lingard is available on a free transfer after his contract with Manchester United ran out this summer.

ESPN reported during the January transfer window that Spurs had expressed an interest in signing the attacking midfielder but United refused to enter into negotiations with the Lilywhites since they saw Antonio Conte’s men as direct top four rivals.

The Telegraph reported last week that Tottenham are continuing to keep tabs on the 29-year-old this summer, with the North London club said to be keen on signing a creative midfielder before the transfer window closes.

Crook has now revealed that Everton and Spurs both hold an interest in Lingard but the journalist added that the England international would prefer to return to the London Stadium, where he impressed on loan during the second half of the 2021/22 campaign.

The journalist told talkSPORT (9:40 am, July 2, 2022) about Lingard: “West Ham, as I understand, is still his preferred destination. £150,000 a week is what I have been quoted he is looking for.

“That brings Everton into play, Frank Lampard is very keen to strengthen his midfield as well. The other club that have been mentioned are Tottenham.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Assuming both Lo Celso and Ndombele leave Spurs this summer, I would expect us to sign at least one attacking midfielder before the window shuts in order to give Conte some tactical flexibility.

I am not surprised that the Italian likes Lingard, given the 29-year-old’s work rate and tactical intelligence. However, there is no reason for the England international to swap the United bench for the Tottenham one.
