Journalist claims Bundesliga defender is ‘on his way to Tottenham’

Turkish journalist Mehmet Demirkol has told beIN Manset (as relayed by Sport Witness) that Schalke defender Ozan Kabak is on his way to Tottenham Hotspur.

Kabak has reportedly been a long-term target for Spurs, having been linked with a move to the North London giants last summer (Daily Mail) before Schakle met his £13.5million release clause to snap him up from Stuttgart (Sport Bild).

The 20-year-old has done his reputation no harm in his first season at Gelsenkirchen, being a regular fixture at the back for David Wagner’s side.

The versatile defender, who has also been deployed as a defensive midfielder on occasions, has not been linked with a move to Spurs since last summer. However, Demirkol has now suggested that the Kabak is North-London bound.

The journalist spoke about the Schalke man in the context of it being unfair to criticise Besiktas’ youngsters after their poor display against Kayserispor this week.

He cited Kabak’s development as an example of what Besiktas’ young players were capable of and in the process, suggested that the Turkish international is on his way to Tottenham.

Demirkol is quoted as saying to beIN Manset: “Besiktas youngsters could make some mistakes. That’s normal. They will grow up and become better players. Just look at Ozan Kabak.

“He was consistently giving away penalties when he was at Galatasaray.

“But now, he has developed into a great centre back. And I heard that he’s on his way to Tottenham this season.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The journalist in question is clearly talking about Kabak here in the context of Besiktas’ young players and not about the defender’s future specifically. So it is hard to tell if he actually has some inside information on the Turkish international or if he was just mentioning Spurs in the context of Kabak being close to a big move. The fact that we have not been linked with him much recently does suggest that he might have let some inside information slip.
