Journalist claims centre-back linked with Spurs is ready to join Chelsea

Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed that rumoured Tottenham target Josko Gvardiol is open to a switch to Chelsea.

Both Tottenham (Football.London) and Chelsea (Fabrizio Romano) were credited with an interest in Gvardiol during the summer transfer window but the defender ended up staying at RB Leipzig and even signed a contract extension with the Bundesliga club.

Calciomercato.it reported last month that despite both Chelsea and Spurs failing with their efforts to sign the Croat in the summer, both London clubs continue to have an eye on the centre-back.

The Telegraph revealed a week ago that there is a £40m release clause in the contract that the 20-year-old signed with Leipzig over the summer.

The report asserted that Chelsea are keen on snapping up the centre-back and could end up activating his release clause in January.

Phillips has now backed up that claim, explaining that the Blues could wrap up a double deal for Gvardiol and Christopher Nkunku, suggesting that the former is ready to join Graham Potter’s side.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “Chelsea want to sign Gvardiol next summer along with Nkunku, they are currently speaking about both players and Gvardiol is open to the move.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Given that Lenglet is on loan until the end of the season, I do not expect Spurs to be on the lookout for a left-sided centre-back in January.

However, having said that, £40m is arguably a bargain for a player of Gvaridol’s potential, and so the North London club might be tempted to explore a deal for the Croat.
