Journalist claims Chelsea player could still be on Tottenham’s radar

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur could still exploring the possibility of landing Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud in the summer.

Tottenham were heavily linked with the Frenchman in January with reports suggested that they wanted him to replace the injured Harry Kane (Daily Mail), but the striker ultimately ended up staying at Stamford Bridge.

The Chelsea forward revealed in an interview with Telefoot back in March that the club had blocked him from making a move to Spurs in January.

Since then, the striker has forced his way into Frank Lampard’s team and found the back of the net in the 2-1 win over Spurs back in February.

While Spurs were backed to return for the striker should he have become a free agent in the summer (TEAMtalk), it looked like their hopes were dead after Chelsea activated a clause in Giroud’s contract to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge by a further twelve months (Guardian).

However, Gold reports that the 33-year-old is still very much on Tottenham’s radar.

He said: “Even though Chelsea took up the option to extend Olivier Giroud’s contract by that extra year to prevent him leaving for nothing, I still think Spurs will look at his situation during the next window with his experience and ability to play alongside Kane and take some of that battering ram role off of the England captain.”

While Giroud will certainly be affordable with just a year left on his contract, I doubt Chelsea will want to sell him to us. They wouldn’t want to strengthen a direct rival and would probably prefer to sell the striker to a foreign club over us.
