Journalist claims club could demand close to £85m for Spurs centre-back target

The Athletic’s Jack Pitt-Brooke has claimed that RB Leipzig could demand around €100m (£86m) for rumoured Tottenham target Josko Gvardiol this summer.

It has been reported that Tottenham are prioritising signing a top-quality left centre-back this summer, with Gvardiol alleged to be one of the options on the North London club’s radar (Football.London).

The Daily Mail reported earlier this month that despite interest from both Spurs and Chelsea, Leipzig are determined to hold on to the 20-year-old this summer.

Journalist Ryan Taylor subsequently claimed that the Croat is expected to stay put at the Red Bull Arena for at least one more season.

Pitt-Brooke has now confirmed he believes Gvardiol is not within Tottenham’s reach during the current transfer window.

The journalist added that while Antonio Conte’s men are willing to spend big on a left centre-back, the Leipzig star could cost double what Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni would this summer.

When asked about Spurs’ targets for the left centre-back role, Pitt-Brooke said on The Athletic’s Tottenham mailbag: “My impression is that Gvardiol will be beyond what they can do this summer.

“Spurs are happy to spend what you might call ‘Romero money’ for this position, but that was only €50 million (£42.5 million). Gvardiol could cost close to double that to get out of RB Leipzig.”

If we rule out Gvardiol as an option, it appears like that Pau Torres would be the man Spurs are set to turn towards if a move for Bastoni proves unfeasible this summer.

The fact that Paratici is yet to push ahead with a move for an alternative to Bastoni, suggests that Spurs still retain hope of landing the Inter Milan star.
