Journalist claims confidence of Spurs midfielder has taken a hit this season

The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare has revealed that Jack Clarke’s confidence has taken a hit following his loan spell at Leeds United earlier in the season.

Clarke was snapped up by Spurs from Leeds United for around £10 million last summer (The Telegraph) after an impressive debut season in the Championship at Elland Road.

He was subsequently loaned back to Marcelo Bielsa’s side but hardly saw any game time during the first half of the campaign.

The 19-year-old was was recalled by Spurs in January and loaned to QPR for the remainder of the campaign.

His time at Rangers has not gone according to plan either so far, with the winger having made just four appearances for Mark Warburton’s side before the coronavirus shutdown (transfermarkt).

Some Spurs fans have already expressed their worries about whether the money spent on the teenager had been wasted in light of his struggles at two clubs in a lower division.

When asked if Clarke is likely to be loaned out again next season during a Q&A, Eccleshare said: “Good question. I haven’t seen any of him at QPR since he moved there in January but understand his confidence took a bit of a knock after the Leeds move became such a fiasco. Hopefully, it’ll prove to be just a blip.”

I was hoping that Clarke would get more minutes under his belt at QPR and manage to build a bit of confidence before coming in for pre-season with us. Now that he has barely played any football this campaign, I expect the teenager to be loaned back to the Championship again next season.
