Journalist claims Conte has requested that Spurs sign 20-year-old centre-back

According to journalist Marco Conterio, Antonio Conte has requested the signing of Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie to bolster his backline.

The Ecuadorian arrived in Germany last summer and has been a revelation since. Hincapie has impressed many in his 51 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen (Transfermarkt) and it is now believed he is wanted by some of Europe’s top clubs.

Hincapie did his reputation no harm at the 2022 World Cup either, playing every minute of Ecuador’s group games (Transfermarkt).

It was reported last month that Spurs scouts had been watching Hincapie in Qatar (Daily Express) with a view to making a move for the 20-year-old in the January transfer window. They will apparently face competition from London rivals Chelsea, though (Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth).

There has also been interest from Napoli, Inter Milan, and some Spanish clubs according to Fabrizio Romano for Caught Offside.

With the race for Hincapie heating up, Spurs will have to make their move swiftly to get their man, and it sounds like Antonio Conte has made it clear he wants the player now.

That’s according to TuttoMercatoWeb Chief Editor Marco Conterio, who shared some information on his Twitter account about the links between Tottenham and Hincapie.

He said: “Antonio Conte asked Piero Hincapie of Bayer 04 to the management of Tottenham. The Italian coach wants the Ecuador central defender to reinforce the THFC defence.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Piero Hincapie is a really solid defender who is very assured and comfortable on the ball, making him a perfect fit for the left-sided centre-back role in Conte’s system. He’s very young, but has already shown he can play at the top level. If Conte does indeed want him, the board have to make sure they get this done, because the deal wouldn’t even be that expensive if reports are to be believed.
