Journalist claims Conte ‘would have liked’ Inter Milan star at Spurs in January

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Biasin, Tottenham Hotspur tried to sign Marcelo Brozovic from Inter Milan during the January transfer window.

Juventus duo Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancour were the only two players to arrive through the doors at Spurs in January.

However, there was a midfield clear out at the North London club, with Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Dele Alli all departing.

CalcioMercato.it reported back in November that Brozovic was one of the options on Conte’s radar, with the Italian said to be keen on reuniting with the Croat at Spurs.

The 29-year-old is into the final six months of his contract at San Siro and is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with non-Italian clubs ahead of a free transfer in the summer (Transfermarkt).

Biasin has now suggested that Spurs and Barcelona showed interest in snapping up Brozovic last month.

The journalist told CMIT TV: “Do you know who tried for Brozovic? Barcelona some time ago and also his former manager who is now in London, would have liked him. The Blaugrana would have also offered 8 million per season”.

If Spurs had enquired about Brozovic, they likely wanted him as an alternative to Bentancour. It would have made little sense for the club to sign both players, given that Conte already has Skipp, Hojbjerg and Winks at his disposal.

In addition, there was no incentive for Spurs to pay a fee for Brozovic now when he would be available for free in the summer. I would not be surprised if the Lilywhites try to offload Winks (or Hojbjerg) in the summer and replace him with the Croat.
