Journalist claims Inter star turned down chance to reunite with Conte at Spurs

Italian journalist Fabrizio Biasin has claimed that Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic snubbed an approach from Tottenham Hotspur.

Brozovic was a mainstay in Inter’s midfield last season under Conte and played a crucial role in the club’s march to the title.

Reports from Italy claimed a couple of months ago that Spurs were keen on reuniting Conte with the Croat in North London (CalcioMercato.it).

It was reported back in February that the midfielder was stalling on putting pen to paper over a new deal with Inter amidst interest from clubs around Europe (La Repubblica).

However, Inter confirmed a couple of weeks ago that the 29-year-old had penned a four-year contract, thus committing himself to the club until 2026.

Biasin has now revealed that Brozovic was the subject of interest from Spurs, Newcastle United and Barcelona during the January window but the midfielder rejected lucrative offers to remain at the San Siro.

He told Telalombardia (13/04/22 edition – as relayed by FC Inter 1908): “I can say that (Conte) tried for Brozovic. Tottenham made his attempt with him.

“But Brozovic, a man of his word, said he wanted to stay and did so by signing the renewal.

“He had Newcastle, Barcelona and Tottenham (interested in him). Barcelona had offered him eight million euros a season.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I am not surprised that Conte wanted to sign Brozovic but perhaps Spurs might not have made a move for Bentancur if they had been successful in their attempts to sign the Croat.

In hindsight, Brozovic rejecting us looks to be a blessing in disguise as not only is Bentancur younger but he arguably offers more, particularly in possession.
