Journalist claims it would take ‘mega money’ for Spurs to land 22-year-old target

The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath has claimed that it would take an offer of over €80m (£68.5m) for Tottenham to take Santiago Gimenez away from Feyenoord this summer.

Gimenez has emerged as one of the hottest properties in European football, with the centre-forward finding the back of the net at a ridiculous rate over the last 18 months.

The Mexican caught the eye last season when his goals took Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title and his stock has only increased further this campaign in light of his brilliant displays in the Champions League.

Spurs Web has relayed various reports over the last couple of months which have suggested that Tottenham are extremely keen on the 22-year-old, with some at the North London club thought to view him as the ideal option to fill the void left by Harry Kane (Mirror).

A couple of days ago, Football Insider reported that West Ham are plotting a move for Gimenez this month but the outlet added that Feyenoord are expected to hold on to the centre-forward until the end of the season as they expect the likes of Spurs and Arsenal to make bigger offers for him next summer.

Mammoth bid needed for Spurs to sign Santiago Gimenez

McGrath has now revealed that Tottenham would have to break their transfer record if they wish to sign the striker during the current transfer window.

The journalist said on the Last Word on Spurs podcast: “We’ve reported at the Telegraph, there’s Gimenez at Feyenoord. Many, many other clubs have watched him and people are seeing what kind of price Feyenoord are going to ask for for him. You’re hearing mega, mega money that it’s going to take, €80m plus. He’s highly regarded.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While Gimenez seems destined for the top, it would be a risk to spend more than £50m for any player from the Eredivisie as Dutch football is nowhere near as intense or fast-paced as the Premier League.

For £60m, Spurs could likely land Ivan Toney next summer since he will have just a year left on his contract at Brentford.
