Journalist claims Italian club are now ‘ready to give up’ on Spurs midfielder

Despite reports the club were pushing to sign Giovani Lo Celso this summer, it appears Napoli are now close to giving up in their pursuit of the Tottenham Hotspur player.

Since joining Tottenham in 2019, Lo Celso has never really established himself as a first-team regular and has seemingly struggled to adapt to the English game.

The Argentina international has spent the last two seasons on loan at Spanish side Villarreal and has done his reputation no harm there.

It is no surprise then, that La Liga clubs Barcelona and Real Betis have been linked with a move for the midfielder this summer.

According to Sport, the two Spanish outfits were waiting on Ange Postecoglou to decide if Lo Celso had a future at Spurs.

Meanwhile, Serie A champions Napoli have also been linked with the 27-year-old and were thought to be interested in arranging a loan deal with an option to buy (CalcioMercato).

Tottenham are believed to be intent on selling the playmaker outright this year and a report from TuttoMercatoWeb previously suggested the two clubs are some distance apart when it comes to negotiations.

Napoli are ready to give up on Tottenham’s Lo Celso

Now, it seems Napoli have reached the end of their patience when it comes to discussing a move for Lo Celso.

Italian journalist Ciro Venerato has been speaking to Tgr Rai about the matter (relayed by Tutto Napoli), and said: “There aren’t the conditions to carry on the negotiation, which is why Napoli are ready to give up on the Argentine.”

Spurs Web Opinion

If Spurs do want to sell Lo Celso this summer, it is very likely we will have plenty of clubs interested, so Napoli pulling out of the race shouldn’t be a concern.

The Italians clearly fancied a loan deal, while Tottenham are more likely to prefer a straight sale as the player has very little chance of a future in North London.
