Journalist claims Jose Mourinho has ‘lost faith’ in big money signing

Jose Mourinho wants the club to sign a top class central defender in his bid to take Tottenham Hotspur to a higher level.

Football journalist Duncan Castles revealed that Mourinho has presented a report to the club to highlight where he believes he needs to improve the current playing squad.

Castles has claimed that the Portuguese has lost confidence in Davinson Sanchez and is looking to sign a left-footed central defender who has pace to allow him to play a higher defensive line against suitable opposition.

Sanchez, who was previously Tottenham’s club record signing when he joined from Ajax in August 2017 for £42million (Guardian).

The Colombian has struggled for regular first team football this season having only made six starts in the Premier League.

Jan Vertonghen was Tottenhan’s first-choice left-sided central defender for many years, and the club moved to replace him in the summer with the relatively inexperienced Joe Rodon from Swansea City.

“We’ve been talking for some time about the recommendation that Mourinho made to the club,” Castles told the Transfer Window podcast.

“He’s talked himself about presenting the report to the club as to where he believes the team needs to be strengthened.

“He believes they need a centre-back, quicker centre-back, ideally left-footed, someone who can lead the defence, which would allow him to play with a higher line against certain opponents.

“He has lost faith in Davinson Sanchez at a point during this season.

“He believes that they need that top-quality centre-back to come in and take them to a different level.

“Also a box-to-box midfielder who can build the play alongside Hojbjerg in midfield and combine with Ndombele.”
