Journalist claims ‘just a matter of time’ before Spurs man is offered new contract

Alasdair Gold has revealed that he expects Tottenham Hotspur to offer Oliver Skipp a new contract soon.

Skipp has had a fantastic start to the campaign after returning from his loan spell at Norwich last season.

The 20-year-old has now seemingly established himself as a regular in Nuno Espirito Santo’s starting eleven, especially on the back of his last two showings against Aston Villa and Newcastle.

The Tottenham academy graduate has shielded the back four impressively alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and has also displayed his competency in possession of the ball.

The Athletic reported at the start of the month that Spurs would like to tie Skipp down to a new contract, with the midfielder’s current deal running out in June 2024.

Gold has now said that it is only a matter of time before Tottenham hand the youngster a new contract, with the club recognising how much he has come on as a player over the last 15 months.

When asked by a fan in a Q & A on Football.London if Spurs are looking to tie Skipp down to a new deal, the journalist responded: “I think it’s just a matter of time.

“He’s a key starter now and he’s only going to get better.

“He loves it at the club and is a far more developed player than the one who signed a four-year deal 15 months ago, so I think that will be sorted sooner rather than later.”

Skipp has done so well this season that he now has to be one of the first names on Nuno’s teamsheet. The youngster will also benefit immensely from playing alongside some of Hojbjerg’s experience.

If the 20-year-old keeps his form up, I would not be surprised if he gets an England call up for next month’s World Cup qualifiers.
