Journalist claims ‘left-wing-back could be target’ for Conte at Spurs this summer

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed Tottenham could look to bring in a new left wing-back in the summer.

Spurs have had issues on either side of the pitch this season, with Antonio Conte often being forced to alternate his options.

On the left, the Italian has Sergio Reguilon and Ryan Sessegnon to choose from but both have gone through their own respective problems.

The early part of Sessegnon’s campaign was halted by a series of injuries before he cemented a spot in the Spurs fold after the turn of the year.

However, the 21-year-old’s run in the side was brought to an end against Everton where he picked up a hamstring injury that is expected to rule him out for over a month (Football.London).

Sessegnon’s brief stint had forced Reguilon onto the Spurs bench, and the Spaniard’s display in the 3-2 defeat against Manchester United left a lot to be desired.

Although the pair are pushing each other to secure a permanent spot in the side, O’Rourke believes Conte may look to target another left-sided player this summer.

He told GiveMeSport: “I still think a left wing-back could be a target as well for Conte, especially if Real Madrid decide to activate their buy-back clause on Sergio Reguilon. It would leave them quite short.”

Reguilon joined Spurs in the summer of 2020 from Madrid with a buy-back clause that can be activated within two years (Football.London).

Los Blancos elected not to trigger the clause last summer, meaning they have one more opportunity to do so at the end of the current campaign.

Both Reguilon and Sessegnon haven’t really progressed into what many were hoping they would, with the latter really struggling on the injury front.

Reguilon is a strange one as he has the tools needed to become a solid wing-back, but he still seems very raw which casts doubt on whether Madrid would activate the buy-back.
