Journalist claims midfielder would ‘love’ to join Spurs but only with regular minutes

Journalist Dean Jones has claimed Jesse Lingard would ‘love’ to join a club like Tottenham after leaving Manchester United but doubts whether the midfielder would play a big role under Antonio Conte.

Lingard, 29, is a free agent this summer after seeing his contract with the Red Devils come to an end last month.

The Telegraph recently claimed the England international has suitors at Tottenham, who are thought to be considering a free transfer to bolster the options available to Antonio Conte ahead of a busy season.

It was also claimed Spurs have been drawn to Lingard’s homegrown qualities with the North London side hovering around the limit following the signings of Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma and Richarlison.

Jones believes a move to Spurs would be appealing for Lingard given his current situation, but would only be worthwhile if he was to receive a sufficient number of minutes after spending most of last season rooted to the bench.

He told GiveMeSport: “It’s always a nice luxury to have to bring in a player with that creativity that can add depth to the squad.

“I’ll be honest, with Lingard, he would love a club of that level, but only if he can sense a big role within that team and I’m not sure I see Jesse Lingard playing a big part in Tottenham’s team next season given what we’ve already seen from them last season and what we’ve seen this summer.”

Lingard could be a player Tottenham turn to if they are lacking in options and struggling to make inroads with their main targets.

In terms of depth, he could be a useful addition but there is no guarantee that he will gain regular minutes with the forward line being pretty stacked currently.
