Journalist claims Newcastle have ‘started negotiations’ with former Spurs defender

Former Tottenham defender Kieran Trippier could be bound for Newcastle United in January, according to journalist Guillem Balague.

Trippier was a great servant for Spurs, being a part of Mauricio Pochetitno’s revolution at the club after joining from Burnley in the summer of 2015.

The right-back had a dip in his performance levels during the 2018/19 season, with Spurs deciding to sell him to Atletico Madrid for £21.7m at the end of that campaign.

The England international subsequently opened up on his struggles during his final year at North London, admitting that he played through an injury.

Since his move to the Spanish capital, Trippier has once again demonstrated his quality, playing a valued role in Diego Simeone’s side’s march to the title last season.

It now looks as though the former Spurs man could be set to return to the Premier League in January, with Balague revealing that Newcastle are interested in snapping up the 31-year-old.

Balague told BBC Radio 5 Live (as relayed by The Shields Gazette): “I hear from Atletico Madrid that Newcastle are really interested in getting Trippier, and they have started negotiations with his people.”

Spurs Web Opinion

In hindsight, one can make the case that we made a mistake in letting Trippier go when we did as Aurier never quite managed to fill the former Burnley man’s boots.

I believe that we might have finally found a top right-back in Emerson. However, if Conte feels that Doherty is not good enough to cover for the Brazilian in the wing-back role, I would not mind if we brought Trippier back to the club.
