Journalist claims one defeat from 2019 is still on Tottenham star’s mind

Losing a Champions League final must be heartbreaking for any player, but journalist Christopher Michel believes that Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat in 2019 is still playing on the mind of Heung-min Son.

Tottenham’s run to the Champions League final in the 2018/19 season is perhaps the greatest achievement for Spurs in recent history, at least since they lifted the League Cup in 2008.

Mauricio Pochettino, the manager at the time, guided his men through the knockout stages of the competition in spectacular fashion, with dramatic wins over Manchester City and Ajax paving the way for a final clash with Liverpool.

Spurs lost on the big night, and the aftermath of that defeat has been pretty damaging for the club. Pochettino lost his job later that year, many players have moved on since, and the club is only just beginning to show signs of a successful rebuild.

Rumours have surfaced recently that Spurs star Heung-min Son could be tempted to leave the North London club in pursuit of silverware, and it appears Real Madrid could be interested in taking the 30-year-old off Tottenham’s hands should the opportunity arise (Sport 1).

Now, journalist Christopher Michel has spoken to Bernabeau Digital about the reasons behind the Korean star allegedly becoming unsettled.

Michel said: “Son is relatively old, he has not yet dared to make the jump to a very big European club. Maybe that is why he is thinking about it so much now.

“This season it seems that he will not be able to get the Premier League either. The 2019 Champions League final loss against Liverpool also had a lasting effect. Son doesn’t want to end his career without a title. A club like Real would almost guarantee it for him.”

I really can’t see Son leaving, even if the player himself decides he wants to. He’s tied to a big contract, and we all know what Daniel Levy is like when that is the case. It would probably cost Real Madrid (or any other club for that matter) around £100 million to prise Son away, and I doubt any club would pay that for a 30-year-old.
