Journalist claims Paratici would make ‘serious statement’ by signing 20-year-old

Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Tottenham would be making a huge statement by beating Chelsea to the signing of Josko Gvardiol.

Reports over recent months have indicated that Spurs and Chelsea are battling it out to snap up Gvardiol ahead of the January transfer window (Tuttosport).

90 min claimed last week that the Blues had the upper hand in the race for the RB Leipzig star, explaining that Graham Potter’s men were ‘optimistic’ about getting the deal for the centre-back over the line.

This was subsequently contradicted by Fabrizio Romano, who stated on his YouTube channel earlier this week that despite Chelsea being in talks with Leipzig, the race for the 20-year-old remains wide open.

Gvardiol’s agent Marjan Sisic himself confirmed Romano’s assertion by telling Florian Plettenberg on Monday that he does not have any agreement regarding a transfer and that his client is not in a hurry to leave the Red Bull Arena.

Jones has now said that Paratici can send a message to their London rivals by beating them to the Leipzig star.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “If Paratici could convince Gvardiol to join Spurs ahead of Chelsea then he deserves, at the very least, a pat on the back. It would be a serious statement signing from Tottenham if they could get that one over the line.”

If Spurs finish in the top four this season and Chelsea do not (which is very much possible), then the Lilywhites would be the more attractive destination for Gvardiol, particularly given Antonio Conte’s pull. So, there is no reason we cannot win the race for the Croat in the summer.
