Journalist claims reported Spurs target has been ‘offered to Newcastle’ for January

Dean Jones has claimed that Newcastle United are seriously considering making an offer for rumoured Tottenham target Marcus Thuram in January after being offered the chance to sign the Borussia Monchengladbach star.

Thuram, who has found the back of the net 13 times in the first part of the 2022-23 campaign, is expected to be one of the most sought-after attackers during January as his current contract at Gladbach runs out next summer (Transfermarkt).

Italian journalist Nicolo Schira revealed a few days ago that the Bundesliga club are willing to sell the French international for just €10m (£8.6m) in January to avoid losing him for free at the end of the season.

Multiple publications over recent weeks (90 min and Gazzetta via Sport Witness) have claimed over the last few weeks that Thuram is on the radar of Antonio Conte’s side.

The Sun suggested last weekend that Spurs could face competition from Newcastle for the 25-year-old as the Magpies are keen to strengthen their squad in January to boost their hopes of finishing in the top four.

Jones has now asserted that Thuram has been offered to Eddie Howe’s men and that the club see value in the asking price that they have been quoted for the attacker.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “Thuram has been offered to Newcastle for the next window. He’s somebody that they are willing to consider. They see that he holds good value at the price that’s been put to them.”

Even if Tottenham match the wages that Newcastle are willing to offer Thuram, the winger might feel that he has a better chance of getting regular football under his belt at St James’ Park than he does at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It is difficult to see the 25-year-old being anything more than a bit-part player at Spurs as Kane, Son, Kulusevski and Richarlison are going to be ahead of him in the pecking order.
