Journalist claims rumoured Spurs managerial target could take over at Juve

Transfer expert Duncan Castles has claimed that Massimiliano Allegri, who has been mooted as a potential replacement for Jose Mourinho at Spurs could be set to return to Juventus.

Multiple reports have cast doubt on Jose Mourinho’s future at Spurs over recent weeks, with RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann being named as the Portuguese coach’s most likely potential successor.

However, Allegri’s name has also been suggested with 90min reporting last month that the Italian has shown interest in the Tottenham job through his agent.

Previous reports from Italy suggested that AS Roma were the most likely destination for the former Juve coach, with the Italian club consigned to losing out on Nagelsmann amid Spurs’ interest in the German.

Castles has now revealed that Juventus are looking to replace Andrea Pirlo on the back of their struggles this season and that the 53-year-old is open to a return to the Allianz Stadium.

The journalist said on the Transfer Window Podcast: “My information is that Andrea Agnelli is considering bringing him back to the club and the idea has been floated that he should come in and take over from Andrea Pirlo.

“Pirlo has been a disastrous appointment for Juventus. They are currently fourth in Serie A, 12 points behind Inter and are in danger of missing out on the Champions League.

“Allegri has been looking for one of the biggest jobs in European football. He is expected to be back in a job this season, it’s gone on longer than he had hoped for.

“There’s an interest to see whether Manchester United change, and even more if Real Madrid change, but I’m told that he has not dismissed the possibility of going back to Juventus.

“What would be required for him though would be a degree of control over recruitment that he didn’t have previously. He wants to have more say over what players are moved out and which players come in.

“What I’m hearing from people close to Allegri is that it is possible he would take that job.”

Even if we were to finish outside the top four this season, I believe Levy will only sack Mourinho if he can replace him with one of his top targets i.e Rodgers or Naglesmann. It would make little sense to replace Mourinho with Allegri.
