Journalist claims Spanish side are unlikely to sign Spurs midfielder this summer

Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has revealed Real Madrid are unlikely to make an approach for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg during the current transfer window.

The Spanish side are poised to lose Casemiro from their star-studded midfield with the Brazilian set to be unveiled as a new Manchester United player within the next few days (Fabrizio Romano).

With this in mind, it has emerged that the La Liga giants are interested in signing Spurs midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as a replacement (The Telegraph). Apparently, Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti tried to sign the Denmark international during his time at Everton.

The industrial central midfielder played in all but two of Spurs’ top flight matches last season, providing two goals and two assists (Transfermarkt). Hojbjerg opened his account for this campaign with a goal against Chelsea last weekend.

It is believed Antonio Conte would demand a replacement for the player if he was to leave, but according to Florian Plettenberg, any deal is unlikely to happen within this transfer window.

Plettenberg tweeted: “News PE Hojbjerg: Ancelotti is a big fan of him, no doubt. Transfer to Real Madrid is not completely excluded but been told that it’s not very likely in this transfer window. Due to the fact that Real will not buy a replacement for Casemiro probably.”

Fabrizio Romano had earlier suggested Ancelotti is happy with his squad. The veteran manager is quoted as saying, “My plans are not gonna change with Casemiro leaving as we have Modrić, Kroos, Tchouaméni, Ceballos, Fede Valverde, Camavinga.”

“Six midfielders are enough for this season. They’re very, very good,” Ancelotti added.

Given Ancelotti’s comments and the fact that Conte is keen to keep Hojbjerg, it would be a big surprise to see the player leave Spurs this summer. It would also be a real shame too, as Hojbjerg is quietly one of the most important players in the Spurs squad.

He does the dirty work, he gives 110% every game, and his mentality clearly has a positive effect on those around him. Spurs would be crazy to sell, so let’s just hope the player himself doesn’t have any interest in moving on.
