Journalist claims Spurs are close to landing experienced midfielder

Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla has claimed that Tottenham are close to reaching an agreement with Inter Milan to sign Matias Vecino.

Pedulla does mention that the deal to take Spurs midfielder, Christian Eriksen, to Inter could help the Lilywhites land Vecino, but it is not clear if the Uruguayan international will be included as a part any Eriksen deal.

However, he does assert that Vecino is keen on a move to Tottenham this month and that the transfer is likely to go through.

The 28-year-old, who has been an ever-present in the Inter midfield for the past couple of seasons, has made 14 appearances in the Serie A for Antonio Conte’s side this season (transfermarkt).

However, it is suggested that the Nerazzurri are open to letting the experienced midfielder leave as they seek to finalise an agreement with Spurs for his transfer.

Tottenham have already signed Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes on an 18-month loan deal this month, with an option to make it permanent.

If we do add Vecino on top of signing Fernandes, that would indicate that Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff are attempting to radically reshape our central midfield. It also indicates that the Spurs head coach doesn’t necessarily trust the options he has in the position at the moment, which is perhaps why he has often decided to bypass midfield and opted for a more direct approach.
