Journalist claims Spurs are eyeing 22-year-old as potential Lloris’ successor

Journalist Phil Hay has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier as Hugo Lloris’ long-term successor.

Lloris has been excellent between the sticks for both club and country for the past couple of years and despite now being 35 years of age, the Frenchman is showing no signs of decline.

Tottenham captain’s current contract in north London runs out in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt) and there have been suggestions over recent weeks that he might be tempted by the idea of returning to his boyhood club Nice in the near future (Media Foot).

Hay has now suggested that Spurs could be eyeing Lloris’ compatriot Meslier as the one to take over from the experienced goalkeeper.

The 22-year-old’s reputation has grown immensely since he first arrived at Elland Road back in 2019 and he was mooted as a target for both Manchester United (Fabrizio Romano) and Leicester City (GFFN) during the summer.

If Hay’s latest update is to be believed, Spurs also have their eye on the French Under-21 international.

The journalist said about Meslier on The Athletic’s Phil Hay Show: “It’s quite interesting that Spurs are one of the clubs looking at him as Lloris is getting into his mid-30s now and he is out of contract in 2024.

“You would assume that Tottenham would now be looking at a succession plan for him. Pretty eventful time for Meslier but this season he has looked better than he ever has and has been a top-class goalkeeper.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Meslier is still extremely young for a goalkeeper and could develop into one of the best in the world over the coming years.

However, I do not think Spurs have to worry about replacing Lloris for the time being as the 35-year-old could easily go on for another three years, given how well he is playing at the moment.
