Journalist claims Spurs are not the only PL club interested in 25-year-old Serie A star

Italian journalist Ciro Venerato has revealed that other Premier League clubs apart from Tottenham are also eyeing a move for Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret.

Over the last few months, reports have indicated that the likes of Everton’s Jordan Pickford and Brentford’s David Raya are on Tottenham’s shortlist to replace Hugo Lloris in the summer (Daily Mail).

La Repubblica (via Calcio Napoli 24) claimed a couple of weeks ago that Spurs might look towards Italy to replace the Frenchman, with Antonio Conte’s side alleged to be moderating Meret.

The report added that the 25-year-old, who has been in fine form between the sticks at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium this season, was planning on extending his current deal at the Serie A club.

Venerato also spoke about Meret’s future to 1 Football Club (01/02/23 via Tutto Napoli and SportWitness) earlier this week, stating that Spurs had already contacted the Italian shot-stopper regarding a transfer.

The journalist has now offered another update on the goalkeeper’s future, explaining that the Lilywhites may not be the only team that make a move for the Napoli number one if he does not sign a new deal with Luciano Spalletti’s men.

Venerato told CalcioNapoli24TV (01/02/23 as relayed by Area Napoli and SportWitness): “There will be a chat with the Napoli management to understand if they can carry on together. The boy certainly hopes to renew with higher wages. Both sides have taken their time.

“Merit is doing very well in Naples and would only leave for a very important experience. In the Premier League, there is not only Tottenham but also other teams that follow him. The Azzurri are looking around and if Meret were to leave, then they would take Vicario.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Most of the speculation linking Meret with a move to Spurs have come from Italian sources, with no English outlets reporting that the 25-year-old is being lined up by the North London club. That suggests that the information might be fed to the press by the Napoli goalkeeper’s entourage in order to force the Serie A club’s hand in the contract negotiations.
