Journalist claims Spurs are only English club interested in central defender

According to journalist Dean Jones, Tottenham are currently the only English club pursuing a potential deal for Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.

The Germany international is currently assessing his options, with his contract in West London approaching its conclusion at the end of the season.

Rudiger’s situation has put a number of sides across Europe on red alert ahead of the January transfer window, where the centre-back would be able to negotiate a pre-contract with potential overseas suitors.

Reports emerged that Spurs had been looking towards the 28-year-old to bolster the side’s options at the back with Antonio Conte now at the helm.

The likes of Liverpool, Real Madrid, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain have all reportedly been keeping tabs on the defender valued at £29 million.

However, transfer insider Jones has revealed that Spurs are currently the only English club in the running for Rudiger, contrary to reports.

Speaking on The Done Deal Show, Jones said: “I don’t see Rudiger signing one at this stage it’s looking very unlikely that Rudiger signs on.

“It’s a very interesting time and obviously he’s pushing for every penny he can get on his wages, so it’s hard to develop talks.

“It does look likely that Rudiger will leave and the big decision really is which club he picks, the only real English target right now is Tottenham then he has PSG, Real Madrid and others abroad.”

While Rudiger would fit quite nicely at Spurs following Conte’s switch to a back three, a move just doesn’t seem on given the history between the two clubs. It could happen if Spurs offer him a very lucrative contract, but many will have doubts on this materialising.
