Journalist claims Spurs are ‘particularly interested’ in 22-year-old PL goalkeeper

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur hold an interest in Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Hugo Lloris continues to be Tottenham’s first choice between the sticks and the France international is showing no signs of decline.

However, with the Frenchman now in the twilight of his career, the North London club may have to be on the lookout for his eventual successor.

90min reported two months ago that Antonio Conte’s men were eyeing Jordan Pickford as the man to eventually succeed Lloris as the club’s number one.

The report claimed that Spurs had enquired about signing the England number one further down the line rather than during this transfer window.

Hay has now suggested that the Lilywhites’ are also eyeing Meslier as someone who could potentially replace his compatriot as their number one.

The France Under-21 international has seen his stock rise steadily since moving to Elland Road from Lorient back in the summer of 2019.

The journalist said on The Phil Hay Show on The Athletic about the 22-year-old (15/08/22): “There is loads and loads of interest in Meslier. I do feel like he’s going to be one of Leeds’ most important and probably best players this season.

“Tottenham are a side who are particularly interested in Meslier. And obviously, at some point, the goalkeeping situation is going to change there.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I am a huge fan of Meslier and I believe he is the most talented young goalkeeper in the Premier League at the moment. While Tottenham will not be in a hurry to sign a number one, for the time being, the Leeds United star seems like an obvious option to go for if Lloris does start showing signs of decline over the next year or two.
