Journalist claims Spurs are planning move for Chelsea player

Tottenham have been linked with a shock move for Chelsea winger Willian in the January transfer window.

The Brazilian is into the last six months of his contract with Chelsea and is reportedly free to talk to other clubs on the continent from this month (Daily Star).

According to Journalist Ian McGarry, Spurs are keen to take advantage of the 31-year-old’s contract situation by offering him a new two and a half year deal to extend his stay in England.

He claimed that Frank Lampard is keen to keep Willian at Chelsea but that the Blues are only willing to offer him a one-year extension. The pacey wide man is thus said to be seriously considering a move to Tottenham.

It is also suggested that Chelsea wouldn’t stand in Willian’s way if he does decide to make the move across London. The winger famously came really close to a move to Spurs in 2013, only for Chelsea to nab him under the Lilywhites’ noses (the Guardian).

It is reported that Willian maintains a good relationship with Spurs boss Jose Mourinho and could finally end up moving to Tottenham seven years after his failed move.

Ian McGarry said on the Transfer Window Podcast this week: “I think this is a sensible and logical move for Tottenham – they have contacted representatives of Willian, the Chelsea winger, who is now 31 and in the final six months of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

“There have been negotiations in terms of keeping him. I think Frank Lampard is relatively keen to have him re-sign, because he’s used him a lot this season and he has produced some exceptional performances.

“But, Willian wants security in terms of contract. He’s not willing to accept terms of a one-year extension. Chelsea follow a rule of over 30s only getting a one-year offer.

“Tottenham certainly provide at this moment in time a very viable option, and potentially a two-and-half-year contract. Remember Willian is a player Chelsea effectively stole from under the noses of Tottenham when he signed.

“He had a medical but then a certain agent offered him to Chelsea and said you’re missing out on something special here. Mourinho is very keen to take Willian. I’m lead to believe Chelsea wouldn’t necessarily stand in Willian’s way.”

Willian would certainly be a fantastic squad option and in my opinion, he will be an upgrade over Lucas Moura. He comes with a lot of experience of winning trophies and given the formation we play, I think he will be a good fit for the club. While he is obviously past his best, he has shown this season that he can still be extremely effective.
