Journalist claims Spurs are ‘ready’ to meet centre-back’s wage demands

Sport Italia journalist, Gianluigi Longari has claimed that Napoli defender, Nikola Maksimovic could be on his way to Tottenham as the North London club are willing to meet his wage demands.

Maksimovic has been a good servant for Napoli since arriving from Torino in 2016 but he has never quite managed to establish himself as their first-choice at the back for a consistent period of time.

The Serbian international has struggled for game time this season, having featured just seven times in the Serie A for Gennaro Gattuso’s side.

According to reports, the 29-year-old’s contract at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium runs out at the end of the season and Napoli could decide to sell him before the end of this month in order to avoid losing him for free in the summer.

It has claimed that Jose Mourinho wants to bolster his options in central defence and, if Longari is to be believed, Maksimovic is one of the options Spurs are eyeing.

The journalist told Il Napoli Online (as relayed by TEAMtalk): “I believe that Maksimovic will go away.

“On him, there are many teams ready to satisfy him even at an economic level, including Tottenham.”

This update from Longari seems vague as he does not specify if he expects Tottenham to sign Maksimovic in January or if they are discussing a potential pre-contract agreement to snap him up as a free agent in the summer. Either way, I believe Mourinho will be eyeing a higher calibre of centre-back than the Serbian.
