Journalist claims Spurs are sending scouts to watch Sporting Lisbon player

Sporting Lisbon’s cup clash against Benfica this week will be watched by thousands of fans, and there will be a number of Premier League scouts among the spectators. For Tottenham Hotspur, all the attention will reportedly be on midfielder Morten Hjulmand.

Tottenham need a new midfielder, as has clearly been the case ever since Ange Postecoglou took over last summer. It is believed the Australian wants an upgrade to his options in the middle of the park, with a new number 8 on the shopping list (Independent).

Spurs will be watching Morten Hjulmand

A number of names have been linked to the Lilywhites over the last year with this position in mind. Now, the latest target to emerge is Morten Hjulmand, who has been a key fixture for Sporting Lisbon this year.

That’s according to Graeme Jones in his latest for SportLens, as the journalist claims Spurs are sending scouts to watch Hjulmand in action during Thursday’s cup tie with Benfica.

Jones wrote about a number of players from both sides who will be watched this week, but in direct reference to Spurs, he said: “Hjulmand is a player that has caught the eye of Spurs.”

On the range of players thriving in Portugal, Jones added: “Premier League transfer news is sure to intensify in the coming months.”

Hjulmand only signed for Lisbon last summer, arriving from Italian side Lecce. He has played 34 times for the Portuguese side this season, scoring two goals and registering three assists, while missing just one game due to a suspension, and being rested for one cup game.

Hjulmand definitely feels like the kind of player who would fit in well at Spurs, and he would be a very direct replacement for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Whether Sporting would be ready to sell or not, especially so soon after signing him, is another matter, though.
