Journalist claims Spurs may look at Brazilian forward at end of January window

Football journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport that he thinks Brazilian striker Tete may be a target for Tottenham Hotspur towards the end of the January transfer window.

The 22-year-old began his career in his native Brazil with Gremio before joining Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in February 2019. He made 108 appearances for Donetsk and scored 31 goals while providing 15 assists (Transfermarkt).

Tete is now catching the eye over in France, where he is on loan with Olympique Lyonnais. The striker has bagged six goals in all competitions so far this season and laid on three assists (Transfermarkt).

His loan spell with the French side ends in the summer, and rumours are beginning to circulate as to where Tete could go next. The move to Lyon was granted on the basis of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine meaning Donetsk have no football to play at present (FIFA).

Premier League rivals Southampton were reportedly set to sign Tete in the summer, but the league then blocked clubs from signing players as part of the Russia-Ukraine scheme (The Times). Now, it appears the youngster could be among those targeted by Spurs.

Tete has now been offered to Premier League clubs (90 Min), with Newcastle, Arsenal, and Spurs thought to be interested in securing his services.

Jones said: “Tete could be an option towards the back end of the window, he might offer some value. Other Spurs targets, like Harvey Barnes, I can’t see them managing to get him in this window. Ismaila Sarr, Watford don’t want to sell him. So none of those are particularly easy to do.

“But the toughest thing to consider is, are any of those players actually up to the level to make up for the absence of Dejan Kulusevski? It’s really hard to guarantee that.”

I wasn’t actually aware of Tete until now, but his numbers speak for themselves and he is clearly a talented player. Whether he is the right fit for us remains to be seen, as I would imagine Antonio Conte wants a more experienced, ready-made attacker to reinforce his squad.
