Journalist claims Spurs star could leave amid ‘serious’ interest from club

De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij has said that despite Antonio Conte’s words of praise for Steven Bergwijn, the winger could be on his way to Ajax in January.

Bergwijn did not make a single start in Antonio Conte’s first month and a half in charge of Tottenham and it was reported at the time that the Italian’s relationship with the former PSV Eindhoven man was strained and the winger could be set to leave the club in January.

However, the 24-year-old proved his worth to the Spurs boss in Tottenham’s League Cup quarterfinal win over West Ham last week.

Conte praised the winger’s performance against the Hammers has subsequently spoken in glowing terms about the former PSV Eindhoven man’s qualities.

Sky Sports claimed last week that despite Bergwijn attracting interest from several clubs around Europe, Spurs are keen to hang on to him.

However, Verweij believes that Ajax could bring the Spurs man back to the Eredivisie in January if they are ready to push for the player.

The journalist said on De Telegraaf’s football podcast: “We do not have to attach too much value to Conte’s words.

“In the coming games we will see if he gets more playing time and then you can see if they really want to continue with him,” the journalist said.

“Ajax are really serious about him. The interest has been officially announced to Spurs.

“Bergwijn has been polled by Ajax twice before. The first time when he still played for PSV, and then last summer.

“Twice, however, Ajax did not go through. The chance that Bergwijn will come to Ajax depends very much on Ajax. He is no longer waiting for Ajax.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I would be surprised if Spurs do let Bergwijn leave in January. Conte has just four forward options in the squad at the moment (discounting Bryan Gil) and so unless we bring in a couple of strikers/wingers in January (which is highly unlikely), he would not want to lose the Dutchman.
