Journalist claims Spurs target’s contract talks with club have ‘broken down’

Journalist Robin Bairner has revealed that Chelsea’s talks with rumoured Tottenham target N’Golo Kante over a new contract have broken down.

Reports first emerged a month ago that Spurs were eyeing a move for Kante, with Foot Mercato claiming that Chelsea are not likely to offer the Frenchman a new deal.

The report added that the former Leicester City star would prefer to remain in London and that his representatives had already held talks with Tottenham and Arsenal over a potential free transfer when his current deal runs out at the end of the season.

CalcioMercato then offered an update on Kante’s future a couple of weeks ago, explaining that Chelsea’s contract talks with the midfielder were proving to be complicated.

The report added that apart from the two North London clubs, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventus were also eyeing a move for the Blues star.

Bairner has now revealed that contract talks with the 31-year-old have completely broken down due to disagreements over the length of the deal.

When asked about Kante’s chances of extending his contract at Stamford Bridge, the journalist told Give Me Sport: “My understanding of the situation at the moment doesn’t vary from a lot of sources to be honest. Talks have broken down in terms of the length of contract being a sticking point.

“We’ve heard that Barcelona are interested in Kante. I don’t think that would necessarily be a good move for either side, I think he’d be better off staying at Chelsea for the time being.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Conte was the man who took Kante to Stamford Bridge and so, it is not surprising to hear that Spurs are following the midfielder’s situation. The chance to sign a player of the Frenchman’s quality on a free does not come around often.

However, I wonder if the 31-year-old will be hesitant to make the move to Tottenham, given that Chelsea fans would likely view that as a betrayal.
