Journalist claims Spurs would have to pay £22m compensation to sign manager

Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur would have to pay around €25m (£22.1m) to Feyenoord in order to prise Arne Slot away from Rotterdam.

Julian Nagelsmann remains Tottenham’s top target to replace Antonio Conte but it remains to be seen whether the German will agree to take over as he is thought to be seeking ‘cast-iron assurances’ regarding the size of the wage bill and the quality of players he would be allowed to sign (Telegraph).

Another candidate who is thought to be on Spurs’ wishlist is Slot, who is on course to guide Feyenoord to a historic Eredivisie title this season.

90 min reported last week that Dutchman is one of the candidates that the North London club are keen to speak to as they continue their managerial search.

However, Spurs are not the only Premier League club eyeing a move for Slot, with The Times reporting two weeks ago the Lilywhites could face competition from Crystal Palace and West Ham United for the 44-year-old.

Driessen has now suggested that the Feyenoord boss would only be allowed to leave De Kuip for a big fee and argued that Slot should only leave to join an elite club like Spurs rather than mid-table teams like the Hammers or the Eagles.

The journalist told Feyenoord Pings: “Slot will leave at the end of the year.

“Slot has given his word to all of Feyenoord, because he just signed a contract.

“It says that he will be Feyenoord’s trainer until 2025 and will only be allowed to leave in 2024 for a limited transfer fee.

“Imagine Tottenham willing to pay 25 million for him, then Feyenoord might be willing to talk.

“He has to go to such a club, not to Leeds United or Crystal Palace.

“They are also in the market, but he cannot play the football he wants there.”

Slot might not have a choice but to go to either Palace or West Ham in the summer as it appears as if he is below the likes of Nagelsmann and Kompany on Tottenham’s wishlist.

Daniel Levy knows that he cannot afford to get the next managerial appointment wrong. So, I expect the Spurs chairman to pull out all the stops to land Nagelsmann.
