Journalist claims ‘the plan’ is for Tottenham to extend player’s contract soon

CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs has said that Lucas Moura is unhappy with his bit-part role at Tottenham and the winger could leave the club if a suitable offer comes in for him in January.

Moura has not started a single Premier League game for Spurs this season (Transfermarkt) despite Antonio Conte being down to bare bones on occasions in October, owing to injuries to Son Heung-min, Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski.

This is because the former Paris Saint-Germain man has had his own injury troubles, having missed eight matches with a calf problem this season (Transfermarkt).

Antonio Conte confirmed in his press conference on Friday that Moura is not fit for the clash against Brentford on Monday (Football.London). The Spurs head coach remarked that the winger is ‘struggling a lot’ and admitted his frustration at the fact that the 30-year-old is ‘never available’.

Jacobs has now asserted that although Tottenham plan on taking up the option to extend Moura’s contract, which runs out next summer, the Brazilian would want to leave if a suitable offer came in for him next month.

The journalist said on Chris Cowlin’s YouTube channel about the winger: “I think that (a contract extension) is the plan with Moura. Tottenham would prefer to extend it but it’s all about the player and does he have that desire, especially as Spurs make more signings to stay?

“The Tottenham reference is an extension, but the player’s perspective is completely different. He’s been limited to a support role this season. Tottenham really don’t want to let that level of experience and what he could offer in squad management go.

“But his form hasn’t been good in limited appearances, I can’t think of much of a contribution in terms of Moura. The reason Tottenham would like to extend is because it keeps hold of somebody they know can still contribute and still has experience.

“But if the right offer came in it’s going to be very difficult for them to keep hold of him at the minute because I just don’t think Moura is happy.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Tottenham will let Moura leave in January under any circumstances as Conte will be wary of having another injury pile up in the forward line and being left short of options. However, the Spurs boss’ statement on Friday regarding the Brazilian’s fitness was not encouraging at all. It sounds like it could be a while before he is available for selection.
