Journalist claims this is the reason why Poch changed his mind about England man

Tottenham Hotspur were heavily linked with signing Ross Barkley from Everton back in the summer of 2017 (Independent).

After it became clear that Barkley was not going to sign a new deal at his current club, the likes of Spurs and Chelsea quickly began to circle.

It looked as if he would leave that summer, but the Everton midfielder ended up staying until January, after turning up at Chelsea’s training ground before leaving again.

This strange change of heart almost seemed like a lifeline gifted to Spurs to have another go at signing him in January.

However, Ross did eventually sign for the blues come the winter for £15m (BBC), but has only just started playing a regular first team role in London.

Football London claim that Daniel Levy was ready and willing to shell out the reduced price for Barkley until Pochettino pulled a plug on the idea.

The Argentine boss decided he had other targets he would rather spend his money on, and dropped all interest in the England midfielder.

Spurs would go on to spend £23m on Lucas Moura (BBC), which is without a doubt a stroke of genius.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. Chelsea fans have had to be patient, but Ross Barkley seems to be doing well under their current manager and making headway for England. He would have been homegrown and at £15m a bargain. I’m not sure why we couldn’t have bought him and Moura. It would have given us more depth, which is what we are lacking. We have done very well to be where we are with the injuries we’ve had, but the CL campaign was almost grounded before it began, due to so many being out for the Barcelona game. I guess it was just sloppiness that cost us against Inter away and PSV away.
