Journalist claims Tottenham are ‘not close’ to signing centre-back

Italian journalist Daniele Longo has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are not close to signing Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Piero Hincapie.

Reports over the last few days have indicated that Clement Lenglet is set to be the first centre-back to arrive through the doors at Hotspur Way this summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Spurs are now hashing out the ‘final details’ with Barcelona to sign the Frenchman on a loan deal.

Another left-sided centre-back who has been linked with a move to the North London club over recent weeks is Hincapie, who has won many admirers with his impressive showing during his first season in Germany.

Ekrem Konur reported last week that Tottenham were set to make an opening bid of £25m for the Leverkusen star, while Revolo journalist Marcos Duran stated that both Spurs and AC Milan had spoken to the 20-year-old’s representatives regarding a summer transfer.

However, Longo has now taken to social media to reveal that the likes of AS Roma, AC Milan and Napoli are ahead of Tottenham in the race for Hincapie’s signature.

The journalist added that Leverkusen do not intend to sell the Ecuadorian international this summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

Given that Lenglet looks set to join, I do not think Spurs are likely to pursue another left-footed centre-back this summer.

I suspect the thinking behind signing the Barca star on loan is to try again for Bastoni or Gvardiol in 12 months as Inter and Leipzig appear determined not to sell those two this summer.
