Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that it is not just James Maddison that Tottenham are interested in but also his Leicester City teammate, Harvey Barnes.
While Barnes has been overshadowed by Maddison this season, the winger is also quietly having a brilliant campaign, having found the back of the net eight times in 20 appearances so far (Transfermarkt).
Football.London’s Alasdair Gold reported ahead of the January transfer window that the 25-year-old is one of the attackers on Spurs’ wishlist but the North London club ended up signing Arnaut Danjuma on loan from Villarreal instead.
Over the last week, multiple publications (The Telegraph and 90 min) have claimed that Spurs could make a move for Maddison in the summer, with the Foxes said to be keen on tying down the attacking midfielder to ward off interest from the North London club.
Jones has now explained that Barnes has also been a long-term target for Tottenham and added that Brendan Rodgers’ men could also attempt to convince the winger to pen a new contract at the King Power Stadium over the coming months.
The journalist told GiveMeSport: “Yeah, they’ll [Barnes and Maddison] definitely be on the list [for Spurs]. They’re players that have been looked at a long time anyway.
“What will be interesting is to see whether on the back of this turn in form, Leicester can actually convince players to give this project a bit longer for a revival.
“If they can have a bounce-back season for the rest of the term, and take that into the summer, they’ll try to keep these players if they can.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Barnes would be a much better fit for Antonio Conte’s system than Maddison would be as I do not see how the latter would fit into our starting eleven unless the Spurs boss shifts to a 3-5-2, which seems quite unlikely.
Of course, there is a major question mark regarding whether Conte will still be at the club by the start of next season and the Italian’s future will certainly affect who we go after in the summer.
