Journalist confirms interest in Winks from PL club – But will take some negotiating

Dean Jones has claimed Southampton are interested in signing out-of-favour Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks this summer.

The 26-year-old has been named as one of a host of potential outgoings this summer (Evening Standard) having slipped way down the Spurs pecking order behind Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur and Oliver Skipp.

Spurs are thought to have placed a £25 million price tag on Winks with both Southampton and Newcastle mentioned as suitors to take on the England international (Daily Mail).

And the Saints’ interest has now been confirmed by transfer expert Jones, who believes Tottenham’s valuation will force the Hampshire-based club into negotiations over the coming weeks.

On the Saints interest and £25m fee, Jones told GiveMeSport: “There’ll be some negotiating to do on that one; there’s no doubt about it. But there is interest from Southampton, so let’s see if they can find a way to do business.”

Spurs academy graduate Winks made 30 appearances for the club this season but started just nine in the Premier League. His absence from the England squad was also extended with his last cap coming back in November 2020 (Transfermarkt).

Southampton would be a good place for Winks to go as he would definitely be able to earn more regular game time in that sort of environment.

There are too many names ahead of him at Spurs as his performances when given the chance have often been lacking, so this summer may be the opportunity to gain a fresh start elsewhere.
