Journalist confirms Spurs player who missed Leeds game was in training today

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has confirmed on social media that Serge Aurier trained with the rest of the Tottenham squad today ahead of the club’s Carabao Cup semi-final clash against Brentford on Tuesday.

Aurier was in a brilliant run of form at the start of the season and was keeping summer signing Matt Doherty out of the side until two weeks ago.

However, the Ivorian had a poor game in Tottenham’s 2-0 defeat to Leicester as he gave away a cheap penalty and looked defensively sloppy.

As a result, the former PSG man lost his place in the Spurs side, with Jose Mourinho starting Matt Doherty in Tottenham’s last two league matches against Wolves and Leeds. In fact, Aurier was not even named on the bench in the latter game (TransferMarkt).

However, the Republic of Ireland international received his marching orders in Tottenham’s 3-0 win over Leeds on Saturday as he received a second yellow card in stoppage time.

Doherty’s sending off means he is suspended for the Lilywhites’ semi-final clash against Brentford on Tuesday.

Gold has now eased any fears that Tottenham could go into the semi-final without a recognised right-back by revealing that Aurier has been spotted in training.

Doherty was handed a golden opportunity to make his case after Aurier’s poor performance against Leicester. However, the former Wolves man seems to have blown his chance, with the Ivorian now having the opportunity to seal his place in the side as Jose Mourinho’s number one choice at right-back.
