Journalist convinced Spurs are on the cusp of ‘something big’ after London derby

German journalist Florian Schmidt Sommerfeld is now even more sure that Ange Postecoglou is creating something special at Tottenham after watching the North London club in action against Chelsea on Monday.

Spurs fell to their first Premier League loss of the season on Monday night, with the Blues emerging 4-1 winners thanks to a late flurry of goals after the home side were reduced to nine men.

Despite the scoreline, the fans at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium gave a standing ovation to the players after the final whistle, which was a testament to the effort they put in despite playing a significant chunk of the game with two fewer players.

Several pundits have expressed astonishment with how high a defensive line Postecoglou’s men played during the second half despite having just nine men, with the Lilywhites continuing to look to create chances rather than shutting shop (Sky Sports).

Did Harry Kane do Tottenham a favour by leaving?

Sommerfeld believes that losing Harry Kane in the summer has worked to Tottenham’s advantage as there is now a togetherness among the players, who are all willing to work hard for each other.

In an article titled ‘My absurd Tottenham feeling’, the journalist wrote on Sky Germany: “It all sounds pretty absurd when you see the raw result of Tottenham against Chelsea – 1:4 but this game makes me even more sure that in Tottenham something really big is growing.

“I was in London recently. My taxi driver happened to be an ardent Tottenham fan. He said the run reminded him of the 2019 Champions League season, in which Spurs reached the final. Harry Kane was injured, now the big star is gone and everyone is playing much better.

“That’s the secret at Tottenham. It was incredible to see again against Chelsea how the players trust their coach in the most difficult circumstances.

“They find solutions and are willing to run for each other. I’m curious to see what the reaction to this performance will be in the next game. Romero and Udogie have to be replaced first, hopefully, the two injured ones won’t last long – but Tottenham is something to be reckoned with.”

Spurs Web Opinion

As Sommerfeld points out, the one thing that was clear from Tottneham’s second-half performance against Chelsea is that the Spurs players have completely bought into Postcoglou’s way of doing things and to a man, everyone fully believes in the Australian methods.
