Journalist ‘could see’ Spurs signing player then loaning him out – But it would be ‘strange’

The Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor has claimed he can see Tottenham snapping up Djed Spence and loaning the youngster to Nottingham Forest but admitted it would be a strange outcome.

Spence is reportedly Tottenham’s number one target for the right wing-back role this summer (The Telegraph), with the North London club said to be growing in confidence that they will win the race for the 21-year-old (The Northern Echo).

Forest are also said also to be keen on snapping up Spence on a permanent deal after his impressive showing on loan at the City Ground last season (Sky Sports transfer centre, 30/5, 10:55 am).

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold revealed this week that Spurs, Borrusia Dortmund, AS Roma, Newcastle, Brentford and Forest are all willing to meet Middlesbrough’s valuation of the right-back.

The journalist added that Spence is now expected to make the final decision regarding his next destination but insisted that the player is not interested in a buy to loan deal.

However, Taylor believes such a deal is on the cards, although he admitted that it would not make sense for Spurs to sanction such a transfer.

When asked if Tottenham could loan Spence to Forest after signing him, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “I could see that happening, but the only thing I’d sort of say on that is given Royal, although he’s improved a lot recently, and Doherty, haven’t nailed down that right wing-back spot, it would be slightly strange to sign a player that could compete with them to then offload them.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Spurs are looking at Spence as merely one for the future. If Conte and Paratici do not think the 21-year-old is ready to compete with Doherty and be Tottenham’s first choice at right wing-back, I doubt they would have made the Boro starlet one of their top targets this summer.
