Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has said that Tottenham Hotspur either have to offload Tanguy Ndombele or offer him a new contract this summer.
There is renewed hope at Spurs that Ndombele could resurrect his Tottenham career following Ange Postecoglou’s arrival at the club.
In fact, it was even asserted by L’Equipe (05/07/23 via Sport Witness) two weeks ago that Tottenham had turned down an offer of around €20m (£17m) from Napoli for the former Lyon man as the new Spurs head coach wanted to take a closer look at him.
The report asserted that Postecoglou is a ‘longtime admirer’ of the midfielder and he ‘intends to leave a space’ in his 4-3-3 formation for the player if he makes a good impression during pre-season.
Ndombele now has a chance to show the Australian what he can do, with the Frenchman travelling with the Spurs squad on the pre-season tour to Australia.
Double or nothing with Ndombele at Spurs
Sheth has now pointed out that since the 26-year-old has just two years left on his contract, Tottenham would either have to offload him this summer or offer him a new deal.
The journalist said on Last Word on Spurs: “The issue Tottenham have just now is that it’s a delicate time for his contract right now.
“He only has two years left on his contract so some kind of decision will have to be made quite early in this transfer window.
“If Ange Postecoglou decides this guy is for me, you’re into the realms of probably discussing a new contract with Ndombele, you don’t want to hang your hat on this guy play him next season and then go into a situation where he has one year on his contract.
“If you decide it’s not going to work, this would be the optimum time to get the maximum transfer fee for him. So I would expect this one to come to a head sooner rather than later.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Even if Postecoglou decides that he wants Ndombele to be part of his plans for the upcoming season, offering the Frenchman a new deal would be complicated.
The 23-year-old is already the highest earner in the Spurs squad and unless he is prepared to take a wage cut, the club would not want to offer him an extension on his current terms.
So, the likelihood is that the Tottenham hierarchy will wait to see how the midfielder performs over the next six months before making a decision on his future.
