Journalist doubts Spurs will allow player to even leave on loan in January

Journalist Paul Brown has expressed doubts over whether Tottenham would be willing to loan out Djed Spence during the January transfer window.

Spence did not get as much game time as he would have hoped for in the first part of the campaign after his move from Middlesbrough during the summer.

The 22-year-old has made a total of four appearances off the bench for Spurs (Transfermarkt), with Antonio Conte continuing to show faith in Emerson Royal.

Reports over the last two months have indicated that Emerson could be on his way out of North London in January and that Conte is intent on signing a new right wing-back (90 min).

It remains to be seen how that will affect Spence’s prospects for game time, with The Times reporting last month that the England Under-21 international could be loaned out in January.

However, Fabrizio Romano told Caught Offside two weeks ago that despite the ‘difficult start’ that the youngster has had to his Spurs career, the club are ‘convinced’ that he is going to be an important player for them in the future.

Brown has now expressed a similar sentiment, insisting that Tottenham would not be willing to sell the right-back permanently under any circumstances.

The journalist told GiveMeSport regarding Spence: “I doubt if they would even allow him a loan move in January, but I suppose that is more likely than him leaving on a permanent which I cannot see in a million years.”

I am hopeful that we will see Spence get a lot more minutes under his belt during the second half of the season, particularly given that he would have had another mini pre-season under his belt with Conte and his coaching staff, which would help him get a better understanding of the demands of the right wing-back role.
