Journalist expects Spurs player to get his first PL start of the season against Aston Villa

The Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel now expects Giovani Lo Celso to get some chances for Tottenham, revealing that the Argentine has impressed Ange Postecoglou in training.

With James Maddison out with an ankle injury, many would have expected Lo Celso to start against Wolves last week, with the Argentine being the most natural like-for-like replacement for the 26-year-old.

However, Postecoglou tweaked his system and opted to start Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in a midfield three along with Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma.

The decision arguably backfired as Spurs struggled for creativity for much of the game and looked a lot better going forward once Lo Celso and Rodrigo Bentancur were introduced late on.

Will Lo Celso start for Spurs against Aston Villa?

It remains to be seen what Postecoglou does against Aston Villa, with the Aussie coach also having the option of playing either Brennan Johnson or Dejan Kulusevski as a number ten.

Mokbel has now said that the Spurs boss rates Lo Celso, insisting that the former Real Betis man will get his chance after the international break.

The journalist said on a Q&A in The Mail: “Lo Celso is certainly the sort of player that would fit into Postecglou’s system. It’s clear that Maddison is Postecoglou’s preference in that central attacking midfield role.

“But Lo Celso is understood to have impressed Postecoglou in training and in normal circumstances would have been given more of a chance to feature.

“The form of Maddison means the England international was undroppable. But the ankle injury that rules Maddison out for at least six weeks means Lo Celso will get his chance.”

The Maddison role is actually perfect for a player of Lo Celso’s attributes. While the Argentine is not going to offer as much as the former Leicester man does, he deserves a chance to show what he can do, particularly given how good he was during pre-season.
